Privacy and analytics policy

This policy describes the official ChessView hosted service. It is an implementation baseline and must be reviewed by a qualified lawyer before commercial launch, especially where EU/EEA data or information about minors is processed.

Information ChessView may collect

ChessView may process account, organizer, tournament, registration, public contribution, support, security, and service-operation information when those features are used.

Website analytics

Unless a visitor has enabled Do Not Track or disabled analytics, ChessView uses PostHog Cloud EU to measure query-free page paths, safe campaign tags, coarse device and location information, curated interaction events, and anonymous survey choices. ChessView does not send names, email addresses, form values, search text, page text, or full outbound URLs.

Masked session replay

When analytics is active, ChessView may collect a technical reconstruction of a browsing session to find usability problems. All page text and inputs are masked, forms and private surfaces are blocked, and console logs, request bodies, request headers, fonts, and cross-origin frames are not recorded.

Purpose and choice

Analytics is used to improve tournament discovery, understand organizer and contributor interest, diagnose usability problems, and evaluate content. Disabling analytics does not limit access to ChessView.

Storage, processor, and transfers

PostHog acts as an analytics service provider. The ChessView project uses PostHog’s EU cloud region in Frankfurt and configures IP data to be discarded. Analytics retention is limited to the configured PostHog project retention period, initially one year or less.

Cookies and local storage

PostHog may use first-party cookies or local storage to maintain an anonymous visitor and session identifier while analytics is active. A technical local-storage record remembers when analytics is disabled. Disabling analytics stops capture and clears PostHog browser persistence.

Anonymous research survey

Visitors with analytics active may see a short optional survey about their chess role and visit purpose. It requests no names, contact details, or free text and is shown at most once every 90 days.

Public tournament information

Some tournament, player, pairing, standings, and result data may be displayed publicly when submitted by organizers or collected from public sources. Organizers are responsible for the rights and legal basis required to submit personal data, especially data about minors.

Your choices and rights

Use “Analytics controls” on the Terms page to disable or re-enable analytics at any time. ChessView also respects Do Not Track. Depending on your location, you may also have rights to access, correct, delete, export, restrict, or object to processing. Contact the ChessView project owner to exercise these rights or ask a privacy question.
